CELLAR INFORMATION The 2020 Sarah Raal is a one off, where both the grapes grown on ferricrete (previous Sarah Raal vintages) and on shale (usually Johanna Brandt) are blended into one Chenin Blanc. Koen estimated that for the 2020 vintage, they needed each other to lift one another up – which has been confirmed by the amazing accolades received. VINEYARD INFORMATION Spioenkop Wines, situated in the Elgin Valley, was established in 2008 with Koen Roose as winemaker. Koen’s philosophy is that of low intervention, allowing the wines to express their region. His single-minded, terroir-driven approach encapsulates the passion that will redefine the Cape wine industry. Biodynamic practices are also followed, although Spioenkop is not certified biodynamic. The high altitude and cool climate of the Spioenkop terrior has aided in Spioenkop producing one of the finest Rieslings in SA. John Platter selected the 2013 as one of his 7 wines to present at the 2015 Swartland Revolution, saying that it was the finest South African Riesling that he has ever tasted.
