- Tasting Notes 1: Antonio Galloni-95+-Col d'Orcia's 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio al Vento is beautifully perfumed, finessed and nuanced, with plenty of bright red-fleshed fruit flavors. Hints of cedar, smoke, licorice and tobacco develop in the glass, but the 2004 remains quite primary and dense, with little in the way of development relative to so many other wines of the vintage. The 2004 can be enjoyed today with some aeration, but its best drinking almost certainly lies in the future. Richer, dark red cherry compote and plum notes start to open up in the glass, hinting at what is to come.
- Tasting Notes 2: Stephen Tanzer-93+-Good bright medium red. Subtle aromas of spicy red cherry, red plum, dried flowers, coffee and mint. Suave and fine-grained, with a distinct medicinal menthol reserve and lovely floral/spicy lift. Finishes with serious gripping tannins. This is nowhere near its peak: I'd hold it for another six or seven years, at which point it may merit an even higher rating.
- Tasting Notes 3: Ian D'Agata-94+-Good bright medium red. Subtle aromas of spicy red cherry, red plum, dried flowers, tobacco and coffee are lifted by menthol and balsamic notes. Enters the mouth very suave and fine-grained, showing extremely pure floral and spicy nuances to the red fruit flavors. The very long finish is mountingly tannic but nobly polished, with lingering ripe, spicy echoes of darker fruits. This very impressive Poggio al Vento needs plenty of time in bottle to enter its optimal drinking phase. In my view, the 2001 Brunellos are generally better than the 2004s (with exceptions), but in the case of thePoggio al Vento the contrary istrue.
- Tasting Notes 4: Antonio Galloni-95-The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio al Vento is developing beautifully. This is a decidedly feminine, graceful style of Poggio al Vento. The wine literally floats on the palate with gracious layers of fruit. Silky tannins support sweet red berries, flowers and spices on the mouthwatering finish. The 2004 is flat-out beautiful. This was a relatively generous harvest, and that comes through in the wine's medium-bodied structure. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2044.
