In the past, such Loire reds have been rather hit and miss – delicious in great vintages, but rather stalky and green in lesser years. Improved viticulture and winemaking have made the later wines virtually a thing of the past, as this Bourgueil wine ably demonstrates – bursting with crunchy raspberry and cranberry fruit, and having sufficient structure to suit lighter meat dishes. Red wine with fish? Why not, with a lighter style of red like this to accompany a river fish or red mullet. Serve slightly below room temperature to enjoy at its best.
