Tasting Notes 1: Neal Martin-88-90-The 2014 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Etelois is more backward, more reticent than the 2014 Les Jeunes Rois when I tasted it at the domaine. There are red fruit here - but they curled up in a tight fist. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. Quite brisk, more linear than the Les Jeunes Rois but with equal length. This is nicely detailed, perhaps less approachable but still it will offer surprising intellect for a village cru. The harvest imminent, within the next 24 hours, it might surprise you to learn that picking grapes was not at the forefront or Pierre Duroche's mind. No, it was the imminent arrival of his first baby that was occupying Pierre and rightly so. The best harvest in the world will never match the joy and fear of fatherhood and to this end, I dished out a few parenting tips during my tasting of his 2014s (including my technique for changing a nappy/diaper with one hand whilst holding a glass of wine in the other...I think he found it useful).
